He writes notes to that affect and continues living the lie thus mirroring his past life as a con, but this time it's much worse, because instead of lying to other people he's lying to himself, which can be seen as ironic and even punishment as the God's final joke on him. This movie is great and the best movie I've ever seen. It's a must see for any noir film fans.
