A biography of Sir Walter Raleigh
Sir Walter Raleigh was born in 1554 in Hayes Barton, Devonshire. In 1569, he fought with the Huguenots (French Protestants) in the wars of religion. Later on, he went to Oriel College, Oxford, and Middle Temple, which is a law school in London. In 1580, he participated in suppressing the Irish Rebellion; this caused him to be introduced at court where he became a favorite of Elizabeth I. Raleigh had an imposing personality, which came from a combination
incapacitated by a severe fever. Raleigh came home empty -handed to face the protests of Spain. King James wanted to stay on Spain's good side, and arrested Raleigh again. He was executed in 1618 under the same sentence as before which had never been revoked. Raleigh asked to see the ax before his execution. He said, "This is a sharp medicine, but it is a sure cure for all diseases." He died on October 29, 1618, in London.
