The story was passed by mouth for years until it was recorded by, more than likely, monks; they were the only people of that time that were literate. It's verbal passing was forced to have a sing-song pattern so it would be remembered. Beowulf is the story of a great man, so great that students today are writing textual analysis reports on his story.
