Can life exist without enzymes?
The term 'life', is in itself, a vague entity. Different people have different perceptions of what 'life' is. To some, life is the quality of living; to others, it is their very existence itself. In biological terms, I have defined 'life' to be the ability to function, be it as a complex multicellular organism, or a single-celled protozoan. This is brought about by vital processes such as regulation and control, respiration, defence and reproduction. Without
I conclude that life could exist, but at a much slower and sluggish pace, without the past efficiency. The quality of life could not exceed that of a life with enzymes. Though enzymes merely catalyse reactions, they also speed up reactions and increase the efficiency of vital processes. Also considering organisms' innate ability to adapt and evolve, perhaps, the age without enzymes would consist of a whole new race of organisms. Acknowledgements: Bio S Group
