Mary Austin in the essay The Land of Little Rain (1903) elaborates on the nature of life in California, seen through the heart of a lost woman trying to
dream and greed for the love of the divine, Mary states, "It is hard to escape the sense of mastery as the stars move in the wide clear heavens to risings and settings un-obscured". She finally gives up, unable feel what the men who come to California feel on their way, which ends up in the stars and heavens. To the stars she leaves the settings of life, her own and those of the Californians.
