Throughout the story, I found that the ignorance and fear of a group can lead to the discrimination of individuals who don't deserve to be persecuted at the hands of someone else's lack of understanding. The prejudice and bigotry that comes across so often in the story can cause this terrible victimisation of people with differences, when it is the majority of society who have the problem of intolerance and injustice.
