In the beginning of the film when Coach Boone and his family arrive to their new neighborhood, the neighbors make rude comments stating how uncomfortable they feel about "those people". A particular scene is when Emma fails to shake Burtier's hand when Gary introduces them. An additional scene of disconfirming communication is when Gary's mother disapproves of him meeting with Burtier and instead forces Gary to attend church with her.
