History of Texas Before the 1500's, Texas was a massive land occupied by seven different kinds of Indian tribes. However, soon the Texans ran out of supplies and they were forced to surrender to the Mexicans. On December 29th, 1945 U. S. President James Polk followed through on a campaign platform promising to annex Texas, and signed legislation making Texas the 28th state of the United States.
