…the faithful became the norm, especially in the old immigrant settlements of the larger cities. Even the Germans adopted English to meet the needs of their later generations, and the number of parishes using the German language exclusively dropped from about 500 to about 200 between 1906 to 1916. Acculturated Catholics excepted that the new immigrants would adjust to the standards of the American church and that they would accept an implicitly subordinate position in it in the meantime.
