Essay Two - Caesar Julius Caesar is perhaps the most well known of ancient historical figures. In his life he gained recognition as a general, a politician and a reformer. Both ancient and modern historians have written widely on Caesar's achievements. Whilst there remains a constant in these works that attests to Caesar's ability as a general, it is his career as a politician that has been vigorously debated. Although Plutarch believed that Caesar "was
politician it is conceded by all that he had great skill as an orator and politician as a whole, but he did not dominate his rivals as he did on the battlefield. However, as a reformer, though he may have made many changes which in hindsight were great, they pale in comparison to his achievements in the theatre of war and as a politician and, therefore, are less reported than other aspects of his life.
