The controversy over same sex marriages has been highly debated over the last ten years. While arguments against it stem from the concern for the "safe-haven" of the family, the moral implications of homosexuality, and the government's interest in encouraging procreation, there have been steps taken to make these unions legal. …could have been refused the right to marry because of the color of their skin. With the recent changes of laws, and the continuing weakness of contestants' arguments, in forty years, people may react with the same shock and horror when they hear that same sex marriages were once illegal. Then, and only then, will the United States be living up to the fact that marriage is, and must be, a fundamental right for everyone.
