Until he was six years old his name was Michael Luther King Jr. His father changed both their names legally to Martin in honor of the German religious leader Martin luther. On the tombstone of Martins grave these words are carved, "FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALMIGHTY, I'M FREE AT LAST". In 1980 an area including the church and burial place became the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site. In 1983 Congress approved a Federal holiday honoring King. His holiday will be celebrated on the third Monday in January, beginning in 1986.
