The ASTP was not only a contribution towards détente, but also towards the development of a universal, androgynous docking system, the United States and the Soviet Union jointly developed and conduced flight where the U.S. Apollo spacecraft, carrying a special docking module, rendezvoused and
a dramatic demonstration to both nations and to the world of the potential "practicality and benefits of détente." In other words, the Soviet's believed that the result was "a more open [U.S.] space program," and that the establishment of U.S. - Soviet working procedures for joint manned missions was potentially useful for the future.
