The Philippines began as a country that we could look upon and see ourselves in, but soon became what we did not; a far away land whose sole purpose was financial gain and who no country that was trying hard to gain control of, had any hope to retain. The Philippines would most likely have been better off being controlled by a power that was friendly to us and was much closer to it.
