…American Dream doesn't mean that he doesn't achieve some form of it. Just being able to live where he does, on his own, and attend the parties (let alone be associated) with someone so powerful as Jay Gatsby is a dream in itself. In the end, he ends up moving back to Minnesota to start over, he may not have achieved as much as Gatsby did in his prime, he still came a long way.
