Leo is scarred both sexually and emotionally from his summer experience, and the impact of this caused him to turn into an emotionally hollow adult. The impact of Leo's summer visit of 1900 caused the downfall and ruin of his adult life and so Leo Colston is definitely deserving of sympathy.
