…variation in the curvature of the lens surface is brought about by a change in the degree of contraction of the circular ciliary muscle to which the lens is attached. When the muscles contract, they pull against the suspensory ligament to stretch and flatten the lens. This shape focuses images from a distance onto the retina. For closer imaging, the muscles relax and the lens returns to its tighter shape to refract the light more.
