Transcendentalism What would Henry David Thoreau, a transcendentalist in the 19th century, think if he were to visit our society today? I think Thoreau would be very disappointed at the lack of simplicity like there was in the 1800's, the lack of bonding with nature, and the fast paced speed at which everything has advanced to. …been living in the city, maybe I still have to give the other side of the island a chance, who knows. Nevertheless, whenever I go home to the Big Island, I know that there are people there that really do live off of the land. They might not make as much money or maybe even too bright, but they seem happy and comfortable. I think that transcendentalists today don't even know that they are transcendentalists.
